Facebook to Set Up Institute for Ethics in AI

Social media giant Facebook on Sunday announced that they are creating an independent Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence with an initial grant of $7.5 million over a period of five years.

In collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany, the institute will help advance the growing field of ethical research on new technology and will explore fundamental issues affecting the use and impact of AI.

“Artificial intelligence offers an immense opportunity to benefit people and communities around the world. Academics, industry stakeholders and developers driving these advances need to do so responsibly and ensure AI treats people fairly, protects their safety, respects their privacy and works for them,” said Facebook in an official release.

“Core questions arise around trust, privacy, fairness or inclusion, for example, when people leave data traces on the internet or receive certain information by way of algorithms,” said Professor Christoph Lütge, who has worked extensively on the ethics of digital technologies at TUM

From past two years, Facebook has been facing criticism for failing to stop the spread of fake news, terrorist propaganda and hate speech as well as abusing users’ privacy be it the ethnic cleansing in Myanmar, to Cambridge Analytica seeking to manipulate elections, to Google building a secret censored search engine for the Chinese, to anger over Microsoft contracts with US immigration department.

According to Joaquin Quinonero Candela, Facebook’s Director of applied machine learningensuring responsible and thoughtful use of AI is foundational to everything we do from the data labels we use to the individual algorithms we build, to the systems they are a part of.

He further adds that Facebook is also working on new tools, including one called Fairness Flow, that can help those working on machine learning systems evaluate them for hidden bias.

Earlier, Facebook has joined the Partnership for AI, a consortium that includes several companies working at the cutting edge of AI technology and that aims to address ethical and safety concerns.

The future of Artificial Intelligence: 6 ways it will impact everyday life

Technology moves at breakneck speed, and we now have more power in our pockets than we had in our homes in the 1990s. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a fascinating concept of science fiction for decades, but many researchers think we’re finally getting close to making AI a reality. NPR notes that in the last few years, scientists have made breakthroughs in “machine learning,” using neural networks, which mimic the processes of real neurons.

This is a type of “deep learning” that allows machines to process information for themselves on a very sophisticated level, allowing them to perform complex functions like facial recognition. Big data is speeding up the AI development process, and we may be seeing more integration of AI technology in our everyday lives relatively soon. While much of this technology is still fairly rudimentary at the moment, we can expect sophisticated AI to one day significantly impact our everyday lives. Here are 6 ways AI might affect us in the future.

1. Automated Transportation

We’re already seeing the beginnings of self-driving cars, though the vehicles are currently required to have a driver present at the wheel for safety. Despite these exciting developments, the technology isn’t perfect yet, and it will take a while for public acceptance to bring automated cars into widespread use. Google began testing a self-driving car in 2012, and since then, the U.S. Department of Transportation has released definitions of different levels of automation, with Google’s car classified as the first level down from full automation. Other transportation methods are closer to full automation, such as buses and trains.

2. Cyborg Technology

One of the main limitations of being human is simply our own bodies—and brains. Researcher Shimon Whiteson thinks that in the future, we will be able to augment ourselves with computers and enhance many of our own natural abilities. Though many of these possible cyborg enhancements would be added for convenience, others might serve a more practical purpose. Yoky Matsuka of Nest believes that AI will become useful for people with amputated limbs, as the brain will be able to communicate with a robotic limb to give the patient more control. This kind of cyborg technology would significantly reduce the limitations that amputees deal with on a daily basis.

3. Taking over dangerous jobs

Robots are already taking over some of the most hazardous jobs available, including bomb defusing. These robots aren’t quite robots yet, according to the BBC. They are technically drones, being used as the physical counterpart for defusing bombs, but requiring a human to control them, rather than using AI. Whatever their classification, they have saved thousands of lives by taking over one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. As technology improves, we will likely see more AI integration to help these machines function.

Other jobs are also being reconsidered for robot integration. Welding, well known for producing toxic substances, intense heat, and earsplitting noise, can now be outsourced to robots in most cases. Robot Worx explains that robotic welding cells are already in use, and have safety features in place to help prevent human workers from fumes and other bodily harm.

4. Solving climate change

Solving climate change might seem like a tall order from a robot, but as Stuart Russell explains, machines have more access to data than one person ever could—storing a mind-boggling number of statistics. Using big data, AI could one day identify trends and use that information to come up with solutions to the world’s biggest problems.

5. Robot as friends

Who wouldn’t want a friend like C-3PO? At this stage, most robots are still emotionless and it’s hard to picture a robot you could relate to. However, a company in Japan has made the first big steps toward a robot companion—one who can understand and feel emotions. Introduced in 2014, “Pepper” the companion robot went on sale in 2015, with all 1,000 initial units selling out within a minute. The robot was programmed to read human emotions, develop its own emotions, and help its human friends stay happy. Pepper goes on sale in the U.S. in 2016, and more sophisticated friendly robots are sure to follow.

6. Improved elder care

For many seniors, everyday life is a struggle, and many have to hire outside help to manage their care, or rely on family members. AI is at a stage where replacing this need isn’t too far off, says Matthew Taylor, computer scientist at Washington State University. “Home” robots could help seniors with everyday tasks and allow them to stay independent and in their homes for as long as possible, which improves their overall well-being.

Although we don’t know the exact future, it is quite evident that interacting with AI will soon become an everyday activity. These interactions will clearly help our society evolve, particularly in regards to automated transportation, cyborgs, handling dangerous duties, solving climate change, friendships and improving the care of our elders. Beyond these six impacts, there are even more ways that AI technology can influence our future, and this very fact has professionals across multiple industries extremely excited for the ever-burgeoning future of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) at a glance

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans.

Research associated with artificial intelligence is highly technical and specialized. The core problems of artificial intelligence include programming computers for certain traits such as:

  • Knowledge
  • Reasoning
  • Problem solving
  • Perception
  • Learning
  • Planning
  • Ability to manipulate and move objects

Knowledge engineering is a core part of AI research. Machines can often act and react like humans only if they have abundant information relating to the world. Artificial intelligence must have access to objects, categories, properties and relations between all of them to implement knowledge engineering. Initiating common sense, reasoning and problem-solving power in machines is a difficult and tedious task.

Machine learning is also a core part of AI. Learning without any kind of supervision requires an ability to identify patterns in streams of inputs, whereas learning with adequate supervision involves classification and numerical regressions. Classification determines the category an object belongs to and regression deals with obtaining a set of numerical input or output examples, thereby discovering functions enabling the generation of suitable outputs from respective inputs. Mathematical analysis of machine learning algorithms and their performance is a well-defined branch of theoretical computer science often referred to as computational learning theory.

Machine perception deals with the capability to use sensory inputs to deduce the different aspects of the world, while computer vision is the power to analyze visual inputs with a few sub-problems such as facial, object and gesture recognition.

Robotics is also a major field related to AI. Robots require intelligence to handle tasks such as object manipulation and navigation, along with sub-problems of localization, motion planning and mapping.

future of python language and pospossibilities

Python programming language is dominating other programming languages such as C, C++ or Java. Python is an Object-Oriented, High-Level multi-paradigm programming language with dynamic features.

it was designed by Guido Van Rossum who was a Dutch programmer. It is one of the most favored programming languages used worldwide.

It has undergone more than 25 years of the successful span and it is one of the fastest growing programming languages. Python itself reveals its success story and a promising future ahead.

Python programming language is best used for application development, web application or web development, game development, system administration, scientific computing etc.

Why has Python become more popular?

Python has gained more popularity than ever. Python provides significant features which catch every programmer’s attention.

Python is very simple to read and write hence, it reduces the confusion among the programmers.

Surprisingly, one of the biggest tech company Google uses Python for their numerous applications and has a full devoted portal to Python.

Here are some features of Python that can project the reasons why it has become so popular.

1. Python Has A Rich And Supportive Community

Most of the other programming languages have supports issues. Also, some of them lack in the documentation which makes it difficult for a programmer to build his project.

Python doesn’t have these issues. It has been around for a long time, so there are plenty of documentation, tutorials, guides and much more to help a programmer.

Also, it has an active and rich community who ensures to provide help and supports to the developers. The community consists of many experienced developers and programmer who provides support at any time.

2. Easy To Code And Write

Python has a simple and readable code as compared to other programming languages like Java, C or C++. The code is expressed in an easy manner which can be simply interpreted even by a beginner programmer.

Although to master Python programming, it will require a lot of effort and time, but to learn this language from scratch is easy for a novice. Even looking at the code he can tell what the code is supposed to do.

3. Open-Source And Availability

Python is an open-source programming language that means its source code is publically available.

You can either modify or use its code directly.

It is freely available and you can download it using this link https://www.Python.org/downloads/ you can start with the Python by simply installing it.

4. Standard Library

Python comes with a huge standard library. These libraries eliminate the effort to write a function or code.

The library consists of many inbuilt functions and pre-written codes, so you don’t have to write a code for every single thing. This contains expressions, unit-testing, web browsers, databases, threading and much more.

5. Cross-Platform Language

Python can run smoothly on different operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, etc. so it can be interpreted that it is a portable language.

That means if you’ve written your code for the Windows platform, you can also run it on a Mac platform.

There would be no need to make changes to your code to run it on any other platform.

New Linux malware mines cryptocurrency and steals your password

Malware that aims to mine cryptocurrencies gas become quite popular as cryptocurrencies themselves rose to the spotlight, and there are a few examples of crypto-mining malware showing up on devices, sometimes even causing physical damage. However, a new virus targeting Linux does a little more than that, according to research from Dr. Web.

Linux.BtcMine.174 is the current name of the new strand which mostly aims to mine the Monero cryptocurrency. But, in addition to that, this piece of malware which contains over 1,000 lines of code also tries to set itself up to shut down running services, hide files, and potentially steal your password.

Among the many steps it takes in rooting itself into a system, the malware tries to move itself into a folder where it has write permissions, gain root access, and escalate its own privileges using known exploits. It also adds itself to the autorun list and installs a rootkit.

As it does all this and gains more power over the system, it will try to stop any other software that may be mining cryptocurrencies, stop services and delete related files (many of which are related to antivirus solutions), and mine for Monero. The rootkit even allows it to steal user-entered passwords in the su command, so it seems to attack on a variety of fronts.

In addition to all of that, the virus tries to look for other systems to infect by looking at all the servers the system has connected to via SSH and then connecting to them itself.

The discovery is fairly recent, and there doesn’t appear to be any form of mitigation so far, though you can use the Dr.Web antivirus to check if you’ve been infected. You can read all the details about how the malware attacks your system on the Dr.Web database as well.

History of free and open-source software

In the 1950s and 1960s, computer operating software and compilers were delivered as a part of hardware purchases without separate fees. At the time, source code, the human-readable form of software, was generally distributed with the software providing the ability to fix bugs or add new functions. Universities were early adopters of computing technology. Many of the modifications developed by universities were openly shared, in keeping with the academic principles of sharing knowledge, and organizations sprung up to facilitate sharing. As large-scale operating systems matured, fewer organizations allowed modifications to the operating software, and eventually such operating systems were closed to modification. However, utilities and other added-function applications are still shared and new organizations have been formed to promote the sharing of software.

Linux (1991–)

The Linux kernel, started by Linus Torvalds, was released as freely modifiable source code in 1991. The license wasn’t a free software license, but with version 0.12 in February 1992, Torvalds relicensed the project under the GNU General Public License.[28] Much like Unix, Torvalds’ kernel attracted attention from volunteer programmers.

Until this point, the GNU project’s lack of a kernel meant that no complete free software operating systems existed. The development of Torvalds’ kernel closed that last gap. The combination of the almost-finished GNU operating system and the Linux kernel made the first complete free software operating system.

Among Linux distributionsDebian GNU/Linux, begun by Ian Murdock in 1993, is noteworthy for being explicitly committed to the GNU and FSF principles of free software. The Debian developers’ principles are expressed in the Debian Social Contract. Since its inception, the Debian project has been closely linked with the FSF, and in fact was sponsored by the FSF for a year in 1994–1995. In 1997, former Debian project leader Bruce Perens also helped found Software in the Public Interest, a non-profit funding and support organization for various free software projects.

Since 1996, the Linux kernel has included proprietary licensed components, so that it was no longer entirely free software.[30] Therefore, the Free Software Foundation Latin Americareleased in 2008 a modified version of the Linux-kernel called Linux-libre, where all proprietary and non-free components were removed.

Many businesses offer customized Linux-based products, or distributions, with commercial support. The naming remains controversial. Referring to the complete system as simply “Linux” is common usage. However, the Free Software Foundation, and many others,[citation needed] advocate the use of the term “GNU/Linux”, saying that it is a more accurate name for the whole operating system.

Linux adoption grew among businesses and governments in the 1990s and 2000s. In the English-speaking world at least, Ubuntu and its derivatives became a relatively popular group of Linux distributions.

Building a Business on Open Source

Building on open source gives you options that proprietary developers don’t have. This guide is for anyone who needs to create a reliable software product or service for their customers. Find out which business models work for your needs, how to build the best implementation strategies for open source products, and why you need to manage your supply chain.

Intro to Open Source Business Models

By now, I thought it would be self-evident how to derive revenue from open source software platforms. But alas, no. Despite the fact that the success of open source software is unparalleled and dominates the global software industry, there are still far too many startups repeating the same mistakes from a thousand startups past. And there are still far too many larger companies that simply don’t understand what it means to participate in, much less lead, an open source community.

As of early 2017, it’s been about 19 years since “open source” was coined to replace the term of art, “free software” — deemed far too scary for the MBA-toting, pointy-haired bosses among us:

“Freedom? Yech! Let’s use open source instead.”

Since then, every single area of innovation in computing is now dominated by the open source platforms among us. From operating systems, virtualization and containers to big data, cloud management, and mobile computing, chances are good that innovation is happening on an open source platform. So dominant is the breadth of open source ecosystems that virtually the entire world’s economy depends on open source software. I hesitate to think what would happen to the global economy should open source software be suddenly made inaccessible (think financial collapse and societal unrest on a biblical scale).

Despite this massive success, there is something missing from the world of open source: successful open source companies. We are now in a “Tale of Two Cities” type of story: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Many of the most visibly “successful” open source startups from the last ten years are companies that were acquired by larger ones. These companies, while successfully attracting large communities of users and developers, were not sustainable, revenue-wise. There are a number of executives from open source-heavy software vendors who have openly remarked that it is impossible to create a successful business with a “pure” open source approach

Web designing Meaning

Web design company describes the task of designing HTML which is derived from web page which is displayed around the world. It includes many important elements like layout, color, and overall graphical appearance and it is considered as sites audience, functions, and traffic to specific while deciding designs it has become lucrative business as more companies create website with them.

The scope of web design

The basic role of a web designer entails one to employ several skill sets in the production and maintenance of Web Sites. To deliver appropriate quality, they would need to harness knowledge in the following areas:

• Graphic design

• Interface design

• Authoring using standardized code and proprietary software

• User experience design

• Search engine optimization

While the above mentioned are merely enablers that help him or her bag the job the real skill set required to enable them to keep the job goes much deeper than this. It centers on the inherent need for a Web Designer to possess an aesthetic sense and an ability to empathize with the audience in order to deliver an enhanced web viewing experience through their designs.

Tools and Technologies

Technology is ever evolving. As a result, Web designs based on these technologies would also need to be redefined with every evolutionary phase. Nevertheless, there are several standard tools which would always be in demand by Web Designers. These include:

• HTML and CSS

• WYSWYG editors like Dreamweaver

• Graphic Editors like Adobe Photoshop

• Programming skills

• Flash

Career Opportunities

Web Designing is a promising career opportunity which displays immense scope for interested candidates. In India, one of the biggest industry, which provides a prospective scope for Web Designing as a career opportunity is the IT or the software industry. Clients interested in getting their online presence established are approaching the software giants to get their Web sites designed. Therefore, the software stalwarts recruit experienced professionals who would be sufficiently qualified in executing the deliverables in quick turn around time.

In addition, they also welcome Freshers who are put through rigorous training and then made to learn the ropes under the wings of the experienced seniors. This provides them with an excellent opportunity to learn the work hands-on.

Most organizations also recruit web designers for their internal projects which have a distinct flavor of their own as it provides the opportunity for Designers to interact with major company stakeholders who run these internal initiatives.

Web Designers are also required in the Media Industry like News or advertising agencies or even in the education industry developing educational websites and learning material for students.

Scope for Application Development:

Now-a-days majority of the applications are developed for mobile,

Usage of mobile phones has increased in the past year. India stands second in the world, in the number of active mobile phones. Today, out of the 6 billion mobile phones in the world, close to 1 billion is being used in India. This comes to about 70% of our current population. Every month sees an increase of around 6 million subscribers. That, in fact, is a lot of numbers.

With the increase in the number and make of mobile phones, there comes a demand for better applications. And in turn, huge scope of android mobile application development in India. Now, this puts a light on why companies like Nokia, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Google and many others are going wild with their innovations – increase in the need and use of Mobile Applications.

Android is an open-source Linux-based operating system designed mainly for smart phones and tablets. It is maintained as an open source project by Google. This open source code and licensing allows the developers and device manufacturers to modify the software according to their needs. Android platform has brought about cutting-edge technologies in app development.

Owing to the popularity of Android, Mobile Apps development industries are considering Android Application Development as one of the best remunerative business opportunities. The need to hire knowledgeable mobile application developer is intense.

India is considered as a country with several globally recognized IT hubs.

One of the main reasons for this is that software as a service is highly cost effective. Before the acceptance of Android, the mobile app development industry was dominated by Proprietary OS like Symbian and iOS. With Android, came the option for dynamic app development at a lower cost. When thinking of the scope of Android Application Development in India, we can take these three primary notions into consideration:

• Revenue – The need for inventive App Developers are increasing in the current job market. Mobile application development can also be taken up as a part time job, where you can create your own applications and submit it to the Google Play store which can be downloaded. Google adsense ads can be displayed in your application which again provides monetary gains.

• Ease of use – Learning Android Programming is fairly easy and app development is cost effective. Any software developer who can think out of the box will be able to put Android into extraordinary use.

• Support – The most important attraction of Android is backing by Google.

What is Digital Marketing? and Why ellom ?

Before we talk about how digital marketing works, let’s first answer the question – what is digital marketing? Digital marketing is a way to promote brands and products online and through other digital channels. Most businesses have a specific audience they are trying to reach, and digital marketing aims to help businesses reach these target consumers through the internet and other digital avenues.

There are a number of different digital technologies that marketers and companies use to get their marketing message to their target audience. In addition to their website, a company might also use PPC and display ads, email marketing, mobile technology like smartphones, social media, and other mediums to attract and engage their target consumers. (But more on that in the next section!).

Digital marketing is vital for modern businesses because the internet plays a significant role in how today’s consumer makes purchasing decisions. The internet also impacts how consumers actually purchase their products and services. This makes it imperative for businesses to not only be present online but to boost visibility as much as possible.

The days of browsing at a physical store location and asking sales associates for more information about products are gone. Now, consumers use the internet to get the information they need to make an informed purchasing decision, even if they still visit the physical store location to make their final purchase.

That’s where digital marketing comes in. It helps your business reach these consumers wherever they are in their digital buyer’s journey.
